Opening Next!

My Name is Cary Cooper creates a trajectory of reckoning for a young man whose life has been roughly shaped by the effects of a Hollywood film crew on his home in Samoa.  It is a political commentary wrapped in a bitter revenge story with such humor, heart, and heat, that it will leave your head spinning.

Jim Davenport, a former Actor and Scenic Designer at Kumu Kahua Theatre, is now a Lecturer in Theatre at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand.  When he returned to his O'ahu home during the summer of 2013, he introduced the script to Kumu Kahua Theatre Artistic Director, Harry Wong.  Harry recognized immediately this was a play that belonged at Kumu Kahua Theatre.

Special Event

Our audience members on Sunday January 25th, are invited to arrive early for a reception with our playwright and director.  At 12:30 PM we'll have complimentary pupus and wine on our lanai and at 1:15 we'll move into the theatre where playwright Victor Rodger and director, David O'Donnell will discuss the creation of the script and the shaping of our Honolulu production.  The performance will begin at 2:00 PM.  Tickets are still available here.

Symposium

On Monday, January 26th, The University of Hawai'i Department of Theatre and Dance and Kumu Kahua Theatre are co-presenting a symposium devoted to examining historical cultural and artistic issues portrayed in our production of My Name is Gary Cooper by Victor Rodger.

Speakers include the playwright, the director, designer and actors from the production, and a panel of artists and scholars specializing in Pacific theatre.
