HONOLULU HI – The July Go Try PlayWrite winner is Steven D. Miller for his piece Iamb and You Are Too

After writing and performing plays in childhood and at school assemblies, Steven D. Miller earned Ivy League degrees in Comparative Literature, then transitioned to a career as a computer programmer.  Now based in metropolitan Atlanta, he has renewed his playwriting efforts, having his plays performed across the country, from Florida to Washington state, some of which have won local and Broadway World awards.

July 2023 prompt:   A poetic meeting prompt.  Write a ten page maximum “meet cute” between two people, but write it in some form of poetic verse.  This would be like the first meeting between Juliet and Romeo.  Free verse, iambic pentameter, haikus, dactylic hexameter, in rhymed couplets, in alliteration, rap etc.  Pick a form, state what it is in the title, and make it work for the scene; I know you can do it.

Each month Kumu Kahua Theatre co-sponsors this playwriting contest with Bamboo Ridge Press in their combined effort to nurture local playwrights and authors. The monthly Judges are theatre practitioners from the Hawaii theatre community. All plays submitted are read by Kumu Kahua Theatre Artistic Director, Harry Wong III.

Kumu Kahua Theatre is now accepting entries for the August 2023 Go Try PlayWrite Contest. The prompt for the month of August is: A super powers prompt.  Write a ten page maximum scene or an five page maximum monologue about a society where everyone has the same super power, but one individual loses that power.  The scene is about incidents that happen to that individual, or the monologue is about what goes through their mind as they deal with their new existence.
